The Silent People

On the side of the E-5 highway, some 30 kilometres from Suomussalmi towards Kuusamo, a startling army of strawheads – The Silent People- stops the travellers in their tracks. The peat heads created by dance artist Reijo Kela were first put up in 1988 on Lassila field for Ilmarin kynnös – performance. The Silent People was put up in its current location in the autumn of 1994. In the summertime there is a Niittykahvila Café, where you can have campfire coffee and pancakes. No doubt Silent People is the most international sight in Kainuu region with 44 different nationalities in summer 2011!

The Silent People changes into summer clothings on the 11th June starting at 9 a.m. - everybody are welcome to join the event, bring your own clothes for the hay heads!

Niittykahvila Café is open 2013 every day, June 5 – June 16,  10 a.m – 5 p.m. June 17 - August 11,  9 a.m. – 6 p.m.
