On the side of the E-5 highway, some 30 kilometres from Suomussalmi towards Kuusamo, a startling army of strawheads – The Silent People- stops the travellers in their tracks. The peat heads created by dance artist Reijo Kela were first put up in 1988 on Lassila field for Ilmarin kynnös – performance. The Silent People was put up in its current location in the autumn of 1994. In the summertime there is a Niittykahvila Café, where you can have campfire coffee and pancakes. No doubt Silent People is the most international sight in Kainuu region with 44 different nationalities in summer 2011! Cafe: Kainuun Kuutamokeikat
