Our destinations give you a deeper understanding of the local culture, traditions and customs. One of the most interesting destinations in Kuhmo must be Juminkeko, which celebrates the cultural traditions of Kalevala, the Finnish national epoch. Kuhmo Arts Centre is a world-famous concert hall.

In Suomussalmi, we recommend that you pay a visit to the art installation the Silent People, Viena Karelian villages of Kuivajärvi and Hietajärvi, as well as the author Ilmari Kianto's bohemian home, Turjanlinna. Friends of the theatrical arts should not miss seeing a show at Teatteri Retikka. Concerts and short-term exhibitions are organised throughout the year.

Winter War Monument

Raatteen Portti

The museum road, Raate Road, begins at the spectacular Winter War Monument. The center piece carries 105 brass bells and it is surrounded by about 17 000 pieces of rock, symbolising the heavy 105 days of the Winter War and the thousands of soldiers fallen in Suomusalmi.

Campfire Coffee and Pancakes

The Silent People and Niittykahvila Cafe

Niittykahvila Café's easy going atmosphere, the irresistible smell of fresh campfire coffee and pancakes and the play of the sun on your skin come together to invite you into their magical company. Time and place lose their importance. A sense of here and now pervades the air. The fragrance of wood smoke. The caress of hay around your feet.
