ACES Europe has given Suomussalmi a historically remarkable award by nominating it for European Town of Sport 2018. ACES Europe is a non-profit organization that rewards European cities and towns who considerably support sport activities and well-being of their inhabitants. Suomussalmi was the first town in Finland to run for the nomination and competed in the category of towns smaller than 25.000 inhabitants.
Suomussalmi is “really a good example of sport for all as an instrument of health, integration, education and respect which are the main goals of ACES Europe. You also have developed an exemplary sports policy with nice facilities, programs and activities”, comments Gian Francesco Lupattelli, President of ACES Europe.
”Now our long-term work for sport and well-being has been rewarded”, rejoices Asta Tolonen, Mayor of Suomussalmi. “ Thanks to the sports clubs and all the volunteers working in them for making this happen. For decades we have invested in sports for all user groups. The health and well-being indicators prove the results. The nomination for Town of Sport inspires us to further develop sport services and sport related tourism in the future.”
All awarded cities, towns and communities will receive their title at the ACES Europe Awards Gala on December 6th at the European Parliament in Brussels.
